2009
is a very special year for Ysgol Casblaidd, Wolfscastle CP School. It
celebrates its 175th
anniversary, making it one of the oldest British Schools in Wales.
A
committee of the school’s Parents & Friends Association have
been hard at work preparing a programme of celebrations for the year
and producing a special booklet as well as a number of souvenirs to
celebrate the landmark.
So
far, three main events are being planned.
-
Friday
8 May a Dinner Dance is to be held at the Allt-yr-Afon
-
Saturday
20 June there is to be a special outing to St Fagan’s Welsh Folk
Museum for pupils, staff, parents and friends
-
Saturday
18 July is the main highlight, an Anniversary Open Day and
Exhibition at the school itself.
-
September
(date to be confirmed) Pupils and friends celebrate with a Disco
Party.
-
December
(date to be confirmed) a special celebration Community Pantomime is
planned.
“We
have a tapestry being produced with the help of the WI and a new
mural for the school entrance being created by Mrs Bethan Maycock to
add to the celebrations,” says Head teacher Mrs Amanda Lawrence.
“In
particular, we are hoping that the Open Day and Exhibition will
attract lots of visitors from our community and from past pupils and
staff to provide a wonderful climax to the school year.”
The
school’s Parents & Friends Anniversary Committee, which is
organising the year’s celebrations, has been fortunate to receive a
£2,500 grant from the lottery-funded Awards for All Wales.
Chair
Mrs Gillian Davies says: “This has enabled the committee to produce
a wide-ranging programme of events to reflect the importance of the
anniversary and the place of the school in the centre of the
community.”
The
special celebration booklet will be available from the end of
February. It is selling at £5 per copy and can be obtained from Head
teacher Mrs Amanda Lawrence at the school (01437
741361).
Also available are commemorative mugs. Hurry to place your orders and
avoid disappointment.
“The
booklet aims to provide an entertaining review of the school’s
history and development from its earliest beginnings to the present
day,” says Editor John Roche.
“Many
people, including past and present pupils, have contributed to this
trip down memory lane and we hope it is a welcome addition to the
records of the school’s achievements.”
