The Mosaic is the culmination of a Millennium Project by the schoolchildren and residents living within the Wolfscastle Community Council area. It is based on the four ‘R’s that meet
at Nant-y-Coy – the Road, River, Railway and Rocks, and the legends associated with the community.
Also prominent in the Mosaic are the buildings, organisations and people that have contributed to the local history.
Depicted is Sarah Bevan’s vision of ‘a line of wagons racing down the gorge’ in 1740, fulfilled in 1907 with the arrival of the first train.
It is said that a table of gold is buried in the ruins of an ancient building adjoining Treffgrane
Church. Within the churchyard is a well that rises and falls with the tide at Newgale.
Near Nant-y-Coy Mill there is a cave which legend tells us that a dog entered, and eventually crept out from underneath a hearth-stone in St Davids!
Within living memory, it is said that an elephant towing the ‘fat lady’ circus carriage had a
heart attack on the ‘hair-pin’ bend. After spending some time recuperating at a nearby farm, proceeded towards Letterston, but eventually died and is buried in a field opposite the Harp Inn.
The renowned Sealyham Terrier was first bred at Sealyham Mansion. Also within the same area, the famous Joseph Harries (Gomer) the publisher of the first all Welsh weekly tabloid
was born.
